We are participating in a concussion recovery research study for treatments such as chiropractic, acupuncture, and specifically-blended supplements. If you have ever suffered a concussion or have a concussion we invite you to join the study, get treatment and help others with similar injuries from the results.
Call to see if you qualify as the study participant please have a conversation with Dr. Aaron about it at any time.
New Nutritional Support for Concussion and Traumatic Brain Injury Recovery
A new nutrition-based product may offer important support for people recovering from concussion and traumatic brain injury (TBI). A recent three-year study sponsored by Standard Process found that a specific nuclear fraction of bovine thymus showed promising results in improving functional recovery after TBI.
This does not replace emergency care, medical imaging, or professional evaluation. If someone has had a head injury, they should be assessed appropriately. A CT scan may be needed to rule out serious structural damage, especially after a significant accident.
However, many mild to moderate brain injuries are functional rather than visibly structural. In other words, the brain may not show obvious damage on imaging, but the person may still experience serious symptoms such as brain fog, memory problems, poor balance, exhaustion, headaches, mood changes, and difficulty functioning at work or socially.
For years, rest was the primary recommendation after concussion. More recent guidance has shifted away from total rest. Patients often do better with a balanced approach: appropriate rest, gradual movement, guided activity, proper nutrition, and professional support.
In my office, we have used many approaches to help patients recovering from head injuries, including cranial therapies, chiropractic care, nutrition, mindfulness, controlled activity, and supportive movement practices. These can all play a role. But this new research is especially interesting because it identifies a very specific nutritional compound that may directly support functional recovery.
Importantly, the study does not suggest that any thymus product will work. The researchers found that the whole thymus gland was not effective in the same way. The benefit came from a specific nuclear fraction of bovine thymus. That distinction matters. Patients should not assume that a similarly named supplement will produce the same result.
I recently began using this product with a patient who had been experiencing foggy thinking, memory loss, poor balance, and exhaustion after a head injury. Within several days, he reported significant improvement. Another healthcare provider even noticed that his eyes looked “bright again” for the first time since the accident. While this is only one case and not proof by itself, it is encouraging.
This subject is also personal for me. In 1996, I was unconscious at UNC Hospital after a truck pulled out in front of me. Since then, I have spent decades studying recovery from head injuries, both personally and professionally. I understand how deeply brain injuries can affect memory, balance, speech, social interaction, work, and daily life.
At Health Center of Hillsborough, we work with patients using a range of supportive approaches. When needed, I refer patients to UNC, Duke, or other medical facilities for evaluation and imaging. I want patients to have the best information available so they can participate fully in their own care.
I will be sharing a summary of the study so patients can read the original findings and decide for themselves. My goal is not to ask anyone to “take my word for it,” but to help people understand their options.
Concussion and TBI recovery can be difficult. But new research, thoughtful nutrition, proper evaluation, and experienced care may give patients more support than they had before.
